How long should a meta description be?
Around 920 pixels on desktop and less on mobile, which lands near 155 to 160 characters for ordinary text. As with titles, the real limit is width, so a description full of wide characters is cut earlier than the character count suggests.
Is the meta description a ranking factor?
No. Google has said so repeatedly. It affects whether someone clicks, which affects your traffic, which is a different thing from your position.
Why does Google show something I did not write?
Because it frequently generates the snippet from page text that matches the query better than your description does. This happens more when the description is generic. A description that genuinely summarises the page survives more often.
