Readability checker
Flesch Reading Ease and grade level, plus the sentences doing the most damage.
Add at least ten words. A score from a sentence is arithmetic, not a reading.
What is a good readability score?
For most business and consumer writing, 60 to 70 on Flesch Reading Ease, which is roughly an eighth to ninth grade level. Technical documentation written for specialists can sit lower without being a problem. A score below 30 means most readers are working to follow you.
How is the score calculated?
Flesch Reading Ease uses average sentence length and average syllables per word. It is arithmetic on structure, not comprehension: it cannot tell whether your argument makes sense, only whether your sentences are long and your words are many-syllabled.
Should I write to raise the score?
Up to a point. Shortening genuinely long sentences helps every reader. Chopping accurate technical terms into vague short ones to move the number makes the writing worse and the score better, which is the wrong trade.
